A Concert Series for Emerging Artists

Concert II: Solomon & Sonett

Back in May, the first concert in Hempstead House drew standing ovations from a full audience in the mansion’s former billiards room. On June 16 at 8 pm, hear a new selection of contemporary music composed by Port Washington, NY, native Solomon Hoffman. The program features a range of original works that span classical, jazz and contemporary influences along with classical and jazz selections. At this performance, he is joined by up-and-coming flutist Caroline Sonett – they’ve been performing together since they met as freshmen at Columbia University in 2010.

About the Artists

Solomon Hoffman works primarily as an orchestrator for musical theatre and cabaret. His credits as orchestrator include Far From Canterbury (FringeNYC, Fringe Encores), Plath (FringeNYC), Rope (Pace New Musicals, RSO at 54 Below), War Lesbian (Dixon Place), Columbia Songbook (54 Below), and Trailblazers (NYMF-SLP). As founder of The Songwriter’s Orchestra, he has created over 50 orchestral arrangements of new songs that have been performed at 54 Below, The Laurie Beechman Theatre, Miller Theatre, The Dolphin Café, and (Le) Poisson Rouge. Solomon’s music synthesizes the classical tradition with elements of jazz, folk and minimalism to produce an accessible and unique blend. He draws on a variety of inspirations, from visual art to literature, and is continually inspired by the virtuosity of the musicians with whom he collaborates.

Caroline Sonett, a doctoral candidate at the Eastman School of Music, has performed in several of the world’s great concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Kennedy Center. She was featured on the McGraw Hill Young Artist’s Showcase as the first prize winner of the Friday Woodmere Music Club’s Young Artist Competition. Caroline has performed with Buffalo’s Slee Sinfonia, the Eastman Philharmonic, Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra, Bronx Opera Company, and in the New York Philharmonic’s subsidiary program “Very Young Composers,” playing alongside members of the New York Philharmonic. Caroline is a dedicated chamber musician, performing internationally with her flute/viola/harp ensemble, Trio Alexander. This summer, Caroline will serve as fellow at the Talis Festival and Academy in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.

Enjoy the performance while savoring fine wine with friends.
