Learning Adventures for Children – Fall 2020

The Phil Dejana Learning Center & Outdoor Classroom

This Fall, the Conservancy’s Learning Adventures for Children are held entirely outdoors, where the environment provides a safe, healthy setting for enriching experiences. Weekly classes for children ages 3 through 14 foster lifelong connections between art, wellness, and the natural environment. Along with favorite programs from years past, we have added several new programs, which will be taught by expert educators who are joining our team.

For parents who wish to create private classes for children in a school or social “bubble” or “pod” – we can work with you to develop custom programs here at the Preserve.

Please note: because classes are held outdoors only, they will be rescheduled on the dates indicated below, in the event of rain. Children will be required to maintain social distancing at all times.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Preschool Art with Lisa Cusano
Children will explore painting, clay sculpting, and collage, inspired by nature’s abundant natural resources. Each student will receive their own box of supplies for the season, and they will collect natural items to create beautiful works of art.

Elementary (K-5) Art with Sandrine Gold
Children will view the natural world through the lenses of well-known artists from around the world who have been inspired by nature. This class is a journey to discover the work of Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh and more; students will draw inspiration from these artists and the environment and use supplies found in nature.  Children will receive their own box of supplies and materials for the season.

Preschool Yoga with Lisa Cusano
The littlest yogini will learn basic yoga postures, meditation, and breathing techniques in fun and imaginative ways using music, books, and stories. Children must bring their own mat.

Yoga Life for Kindergarten through Grade 9
The Conservancy partners with Yoga Life for our elementary yoga classes this fall. Visit www.yogalifepw.com to register.

Science in Nature with Tracy Strianese
Safely explore the natural wonders of the Preserve with guided hikes and hands-on STEAM-based activities.  Visit different areas of the preserve and discover a new, exciting topic each week.

Nature Journaling with Hildur Palsdottir
This outdoor nature immersion class will feature energetic hikes through the woodlands and include mindful moments for students to connect with nature and contribute data collected as citizen scientists. Students will draw inspiration from early naturalists and explorers to create their own personalized nature journals.
