b'B ack in 2001, leonard Wurzel was our mayor and tom suozzi was the nassau County executive. it soon became apparent that for the sands Point Preserve to fulfill its potential, our community had to become involved.i became a member of the friends of the sands Point Preserve soon after it was formed. Jean-marie Posner was there, as was marsha forman, and to our great luck, her daughter, Karli hagedorn. We all put our heads together to see what we could do.my thought of having an ice cream truck come to the Preserve and inviting the children of sands Point residents to come by became, in committee, Village day, with a petting zoo, horseback rides, a greengrocer, and live music.the Preserve was in the process of recreating itself, becoming a welcoming destination for our entire community to enjoy.as if by magic, there were evenings of live music, fabulous galas, holiday events, a childrens learning center, a playground, an organic garden, and things too many to mention.Just recently, the sands Point Preserve Conservancy met the challenge of recreating the hempstead house Garden, replacing diseased roses with a new garden designed in the style ofThe New Perennial Movement.this evening we are celebrating the opening of the new garden.it is a transition from one century to the next, with the promise that, as perennials do, and with your help, the sands Point Preserve will flourish for a very long time.Jane Stern'
