b'Congratulations to thesands Point Preserve Conservancy (sPPC)on the Garden Party Gal ain 1917, the parcel of land currently known as the sands Point Preserve was purchased by daniel (and florence) Guggenheim. approximately a century ago, florence Guggenheim created a magnificent rose garden at the site, situated between hempstead house and long island sound. although the rose garden languished after florences death in 1944, the friends of the sands Point Preserve (predecessor to the sPPC) re-established the rose garden utilizing florence Guggenheims original design. regrettably, during the past few years, the roses succumbed to rose rosettes disease, decimating the garden. Characteristics of the disease, with virtually all species of roses susceptible to the disease, and transmission by mites in the air and soil, prevented there-introduction of roses.fortunately, the sPPC used this seemingly-unfortunate development as an opportunity to revision the hempstead house Garden, by introducing native plants, pollinators, and sensory plants. With the guidance of the renowned landscape architectural firm, matthews nielsen landscape architects (mnla), and longtime groundskeeper at the site, Calabrese & sons, the garden has been beautifully re-visioned and restored. thank you to the sPPC for ensuring that the garden will be enjoyed by many future generations.Frank Ullman'
