The annual ‘Bark in the Park’ benefit for the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter and The Shelter Connection takes place at the Sands Point Preserve’s new dog run on Monday, October 8 at 11 am to 3 pm (rain date October 13). Sponsored by Leslie’s Leashes, a Port Washington-based dog walking and pet sitting company, the fundraiser features raffles and prizes. All dog items, food, treats, or monetary donations are welcome.

Dog owners are always welcome to bring their four-legged friends to the Sands Point Preserve, provided the dogs are kept on a leash at all times.  Now, the new dog run enclosure will provide safe, separate spaces for large dogs and small dogs to play and socialize off leash, with owners closely supervising their dogs. Located on the Great Lawn, conveniently close to the parking lot, the run is 100′ x 80′ with a special chambered entrance for pets and their owners.

Besides fun, Bark in the Park is also an opportunity to give back to our animal community through donations to The Shelter Connection and The Town of North Hempstead Shelter, located on Marino Avenue in Port Washington, NY. Volunteers are professionally trained as adoption advisers and dog handlers, and fundraising efforts support many shelter improvement programs such as Mend-a-Paw. The Shelter Connection’s mission is to improve the quality of the life for the homeless dogs at the shelter by increasing adoptions through training and socialization and through educational outreach teaching the public that shelter dogs are not “damaged goods.” Other missions include educating adopters in breed choices and responsible dog care and provide general public education about animal welfare.

Join us to support these important services and celebrate our wonderful dog-loving community!
