Life Between the Tides: Animals, Plants, and Amazing Adaptations for Survival

This month’s walk (age 13 to adults) will take place at a special time when the tide is lowest and there is a window of opportunity to watch sea life that can seldom be seen. The Long Island Sound hasĀ 70 different types of seaweed, several types of crab as well as sea-stars, urchins, seahorses, horseshoe crabs, and many other species – each with its own adaptations to survive in the zone between the air and the sea, crashing waves and rocks, strong winds and salt spray, and quick changes in temperature extremes. We will also learn about plants and their adaptations to the harsh environments close to the water. On this walk, you will also learn to identify seashells found along the Long Island Sound.

Citizen Science: We will be recording data species of seaweeds found on the GLOBE database. As always, we will take measurements of clouds and water chemistry/quality data, and data collected will be shared for learning and study with scientists, students, and naturalists across the world on the GLOBE interactive mapping and data visualization database (Global Learning and Observation to Benefit the Environment).
