Canceled: Kentucky Derby Gala

This event is canceled for the health and safety of our patrons.

The Sands Point Preserve Conservancy will host the Kentucky Derby Gala on Saturday, May 2, 2020, in Hempstead House on the Guggenheim Estate. The VIP Julep Hour begins at 5:30 pm; general guests are invited to arrive at 6 pm; and the race for the roses starts at 7 pm sharp!

We’ll celebrate the Guggenheim family’s connection to this legendary race – Harry Guggenheim, a founder of the New York Racing Association, raised and raced thoroughbreds, and his famed horse, Dark Star, won the Kentucky Derby in 1953. At 25-to-1 odds, Dark Star led the entire ‘run for the roses’ and beat favored Native Dancer by a head.  Watch the news video of the race here.

The gala will raise funds to support the renovation of multiple spaces inside Castle Gould, the original stable and carriage house on the Guggenheim Estate.

The Conservancy proudly honors Karen and Ed Adler, Mayor of Sands Point, for their generous support and advocacy for the Sands Point Preserve.
